Description of the Emperor Angelfish

The Emperor Angelfish is a reef dwelling marine angelfish. Juvenile Emperors are dark blue in color and have blue and white stripes around their body. The adults however, have yellow and blue stripes, with black around the eyes and a white mouth. It can take over two years for the Juvenile's coloring to change to its adult color. The picture above shows an adult Emperor. Like other Angelfish, the Emperor is very territorial and aggressive towards its own species and smaller fish.

Emperor Angelfish secrete a type of mucus, or slime, from their skin. This slime provides protection against parasites and infections and helps the Emperor Angelfish to move through the water faster. Some fish species also release toxins in their slime which ward off enemy attacks. Other fish species use their slime to feed their young.

Why do Emperor Angelfish have gills?
Gills enable the Emperor Angelfish to breathe. Gills consist of thin sheets of tissue containing blood vessels. As water passes over the gills oxygen is absorbed into the blood stream Carbon dioxide passes out into the water. The gills are protected by a large bony plate called an operculum. Some fish species however have lungs and breathe air.
