Description of the African Dwarf Frog

The African Dwarf Frog is also known as the Congo Dwarf Clawed Frog and are endemic to Central Africa. They don't have any teeth or a tongue and are completely aquatic in fact they can only survive for 10 to 15 minutes outside the tank. An excellent addition to a community tank, they are a peaceful species and recommended for beginners. Ensure the water level on the tank allows for the frog to reach the surface occasionally. A well fitting  lid on the tank is vital, these frogs can jump!

African Dwarf Frog secrete a type of mucus, or slime, from their skin. This slime provides protection against parasites and infections and helps the African Dwarf Frog to move through the water faster. Some fish species also release toxins in their slime which ward off enemy attacks. Other fish species use their slime to feed their young.

Why do African Dwarf Frog have gills?
Gills enable the African Dwarf Frog to breathe. Gills consist of thin sheets of tissue containing blood vessels. As water passes over the gills oxygen is absorbed into the blood stream Carbon dioxide passes out into the water. The gills are protected by a large bony plate called an operculum. Some fish species however have lungs and breathe air.
