According to recent research, pet fish can be found in almost 12 million US households. They are the third most popular pet in the US, Cats being the most popular pet with Dogs in second place. In fact, there are over 150 million pet fish found in US households, medical centres, schools, dentist surgeries and countless other locations. An aquarium filled with colorful fish has a calming influence, many people will agree that watching a tank of beautiful tropical fish can help with relaxation. An aquarium makes an attractive addition to any room.

So, what type of pet fish do you choose? Goldfish are the ideal pet fish as they are very easy to look after and also extremely hardy and can be kept in a pond outside or indoors in a simple coldwater tank. Tropical and Marine fish are also fantastic pets but they do need quite a lot more care. Filters, Water Temperature and Food need to be considered. You also need to ensure you select fish that will live together in harmony! Some species are not good community fish while others such as Rainbow fish for example are beautiful, lively and are ideal for most aquariums.

The males and females of many fish species have different colors or different shaped bodies. But there are also other fish species where there is no visible difference. Its sometimes tricky being an ichthyologist!

Pet Fish secrete a type of mucus, or slime, from their skin. This slime provides protection against parasites and infections and helps the Pet Fish to move through the water faster. Some fish species also release toxins in their slime which ward off enemy attacks. Other fish species use their slime to feed their young.

Gills enable the Pet Fish to breathe. Gills consist of thin sheets of tissue containing blood vessels. As water passes over the gills oxygen is absorbed into the blood stream Carbon dioxide passes out into the water. The gills are protected by a large bony plate called an operculum. Some fish species however have lungs and breathe air.

A fin is an external appendage or "limb" of a fish. Fins are used for directing, stabilizing, or propelling the different fish species in water. Numbers of fins vary between fish species, but there are usually seven. Each of the fins on a fish are designed to perform a specific function:

  • Dorsal fins - The dorsal fin is located on the backs of fishes. The Pet Fish has Dorsal fins to lend stability in swimming.
