Facts about Fish Species - How do
Star Fish Eat?
The mouth of the Star fish is
underneath its body. It also has two stomachs! Food
initially passes through a short oesophagus into the first
stomach which is known as the cardiac stomach. The food then
moves through to its second stomach known as the pyloric
stomach. Each of the Starfishes arms has two hollow tubes
containing a pyloric caeca (pouch). These branch out from the
pyloric stomach. Each one of the pyloric caecum (pouches) is
lined by digestive glands which absorb nutrients from the food
by secreting digestive enzymes. The pyloric stomach also has a
short intestine which runs from it to the anus which is located
in the center of its upper body.
